“Like our stomachs, our minds are hurt more often by overeating than by hunger.”
— Petrarch
The mind can be a source of great pleasure or pain, and just like bodies our minds come in all shapes and sizes. Just as there are bodies that can perform seemingly impossible gymnastic, strength, and other feats, there are also bodies that cannot do a single pull-up. The same is true of minds. This is important to know and means that not everyone has the same inherent level of peace, and that ailments like depression and anxiety are not the same for all people. Every type of mental process, whether thinking or feeling, is unique within each person.
But just as the person who cannot do one pull-up might get on an exercise program and become a pull-up champ, we can exercise our minds to achieve amazing growth and change. Mental change takes the same dedication and consistency as physical change, this cannot be stressed enough, the key is regular and consistent effort.
Physical improvement is achieved by not one, but many things, including diet and a combination of strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular training. Likewise, mental improvement is achieved by many things, including diet and a combination of awareness, neurological, and behavioral training. This site provides mental exercises to promote mental and emotional fitness.
One form of mental exercise that I believe to be foundational is to review and question your beliefs – most of which are unconsciously inherited from society, culture, religion, and family. By definition, we believe all of our beliefs so how do we get beyond them? You must first decide that all your beliefs are open for questioning and then ask the right questions. Many good questions are counter-intuitive or obscure unless we stumble upon them or get help from a process or person. Quiet Clarity presents stories and posts that offer viewpoints and ask questions that prompt you to review your thinking and beliefs.
Here are some other things that guide what we do:
It is important to mental and emotional fitness to explore life, humanity, God, meaning, and love.
There are no wrong or right answers or methods.
There are no goal posts, carrots, or any magical endpoints to be reached.
There is no single path that is better or worse.
We like to get to the bottom line quickly.
We know from personal experience that you can change how you think and feel. You can feel more peace and happiness.
We also know it will take consistent effort and hard work for the rest of your life. That is the truth and we want to help you get there.
Here is a meditation you might find handy, and some free hypnosis recordings.
