How To Enjoy A Good Binge
I love to binge. Yes, I do! And I am getting better and better at it.
Ok, you may think that I am nuts but let me explain. When you binge there are two choices, you can feel bad about yourself, or you can feel good about yourself. I choose the latter.
Feeling bad about ourselves makes everything worse, our mind's interpretation of the event is that we did something wrong and cannot be trusted. Our body chemistry changes and we produce stress hormones, exactly what we do NOT want. The stress hormones and resulting physiology signal our body to store fat and prepare for impending doom. We turn our body into the very fat storage machine we do not want. Also, it is a signal to ourselves and our subconscious mind that we are not in control of our behavior.
How about embracing our mental challenges and emotional cycles and enjoying the binge? If you binge once in a while relax into the binge, enjoy every part of it, you are in control. You are allowing yourself to indulge occasionally. Of course, you can take advantage of this freedom and then it will be counter to your wishes. But if you are only bingeing once in awhile you may be surprised how well this works.
Enjoy the freedom, work through the guilt and overcome your mind's pull to feel bad about yourself. The more aware you become of the part of your mind that is trying to make you feel guilty or bad, the more aware you become of where self-sabotage is coming from. You will likely find that when you give yourself this freedom, the reason for wanting to binge disappears because much about bingeing is a struggle for control that you already have! You just did not know it. Plus it is fun once in a while!
