The World Breaks Everyone
Yesterday I watched "The Grey," a movie about a group of men that are hunted by wolves after crashing in the Alaskan wilderness. Very disturbing, very thought provoking.
For most of us, our physical survival has become so comfortable we only think about it when we are afraid of death and illness. As living beings, we need to feel hunted, if not by wild animals then pathogens and disease. Perhaps we are here for that exact experience.
The star of the movie has given up on life, challenged God to present him with purpose and meaning. In the end, you will have to decide if he finds that purpose and meaning, but this is not a feel good kind of movie.
For me, there needs to be some context in our lives. Are we here as privileged and spoiled spirits only to indulge in luxurious living? Only to get whatever we think we want, already fully aware and just enjoying the ride? Or are we here to learn and grow, to experience this existence? Are life's challenges the very purpose we are searching for?
